A Purrfect Legacy
Deborah Ann Burg's kindness toward others and her lifelong love of felines inspired a legacy that is providing safe and healthy environments for cats at the Lexington Humane Society and for unowned cats living in our community. A warm and generous person who embodied compassion in everything she did, Deborah's legacy will celebrate her life and provide care for the felines she loved, for years to come.
A Saint Louis native and Villa Duchesne alumna, Deborah followed her calling and received her Registered Nurse diploma from Barnes-Jewish Hospital of Washington University School of Medicine in 1970. Moving to Florida in 1978 to care for her aging parents, she devoted her nursing career to serving patients in acute care situations at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. She was a mentor to new nursing recruits and a trusted leader among her peers.
While Deborah's career was dedicated to saving lives, her personal passion was cats. Her passion involved helping cats that were homeless, injured, and needed to be spayed and neutered. She adopted many cats and kittens from the Sarasota Humane Society and was a generous financial supporter to local and national organizations caring for animals.
After retiring, she relocated to Lexington to enjoy being closer to family in the Bluegrass. Deborah quickly became a champion for the Lexington Humane Society's "Project Purrfect," a program dedicated to improving the lives of cats in our care as well as those living in Lexington's community cat colonies. She was impressed that the program extended beyond the shelter, and she talked often about Project Purrfect's impact.
Project Purrfect's mission is twofold: first, to create a safe and nurturing environment for felines in our care awaiting adoption. Second, to promote cat welfare in the community through education, spay/neuter services, and adoption.
Deborah's legacy ensures a more purrfect place for the cats she loved, and it celebrates her kindness and compassion toward all animals. In celebration of her love of felines and with appreciation for her generosity, the "Deborah Ann Burg Project Purrfect" program has henceforth been named. We are grateful she entrusted us with this legacy of love.
